Taking care of the exterior of your home includes everything from lawn, driveway, garden, shrubbery, front and backyard. Landscape maintenance and landscaping includes the proper planning and designing of the area of land in order to make it more visually appealing, and meet your functional needs as well.

Whether it’s the addition of plants, changing of the existing terrain to accommodate new construction of structures, creating a garden, altering parts of the land to create space for a natural habitat for native animals in your community, or maintaining the look of the outside of your home to keep it looking tidy, landscaping options are abundant.

Landscaping: where your home and the outdoors merge

Landscaping as a profession provides most who work the service a special sense of fulfillment not quite offered in other professions. Landscaping allows people to get to do something completely different everyday.

Landscapers aren’t just gardeners – they shape the land, have skills in plumbing, drainage, decking, timberwork, stone work, carpentry, are builders, sculptors, and general contractors all mixed into one. Designing and piecing together a garden, front yard, and/or back yard, to reflect the home owner’s wishes, personality, and the land’s functionality requires a multi-talented professional.

If your home includes a space where you can spend your time outdoors, chances are, you will want the area looking and feeling comfortable. Your front and back yard are an extension of your home. Maintaining the aesthetics of it will be more inviting for you and guests alike.

Mulching is the act of spreading material over the surface of soil in order to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, keep the soil temperature optimal, prevent frost heaving (swelling of soil when it freezes) on soil bed, and to make the patch of soil where you plants are look more aesthetically pleasing.

Common types of mulch used in mulching can be made from bark, pine needles, grass clippings, newspaper, shredded leaves, straw, hay, stone/gravel, and black plastics.

Soil needs to breathe. When a layer of dead organic material collects on top of your soil, it makes it hard for soil to evenly distribute moisture, have good aeration, have a healthy pH balance, and have health foliage growth for your plants and grass. Not only is it bad for your plants, having a layer of dead organic material on your lawn also promotes insect growth.

Dethatching your lawn is the process of removing the layer of dead organic material. The job is tedious, but by doing so, you maintain an environment for grass and plants to grow in an ideal environment, leaving your lawn looking greener and healthier.

The general service that you can expect from a typical landscape maintenance will almost always include lawn moving, garden care, and shrub trimming. If your front lawn, backyard, and drive way is in good condition, the type of work will be more along the lines of tidying.

Landscape maintenance can also include fertilization of your lawn, dethatching, seeding, and insect treatment if necessary, in order to take care of your lawn as well.

A yard and a garden are different, but not mutually exclusive! A garden can have an area where there is a yard. At its essence, a yard is a small area of land that is uncultivated, and will usually consist of mostly a lawn.

A garden refers to an area that involves a designated plot of land where plants are grown. These plants can be edible or for ornamental purposes. The term garden in North America is mostly understood as a place where plants are grown and can be harvested.

Gardening is the practice of growing plants. Gardening will include activities such as planting, mulching, and pest control.

Landscaping is concerned with the aesthetics of the land, but often will include gardening services. A landscaper will have skills that dabble into the realm of gardening. On top of that, landscapers have a keen understanding of nature, land aesthetics and design, knowledge on how to utilize concrete, wood, and other material to improve the environment around them.
